Obtaining Your Marriage License - Medina County
So many of our brides ask about the process of obtaining all of the paperwork needed for their marriage in Medina County that we thought it would be best to layout the steps for you. Please note, every situation is different and parts of this process may vary slightly from couple to couple.
At least one applicant must be a resident of Medina County. If both parties reside outside of the State of Ohio, then the marriage ceremony must take place in Medina County, Ohio.
STEP 1: Apply for your Marriage License
When: Up to 60 days before your wedding day
Where: Medina Courthouse
How: In person, between 8:00 am and 3:30 pm Monday through Friday
Cost: $72 CASH
What to Bring: Both parties and photo ID for each individual
Tips & Tricks: The court will need the applicants' addresses, ages, places of birth, occupations, fathers' names and mothers' maiden names, and the name of the person who is to solemnize the marriage. If either applicant had prior marriages, the applicant must include the names of the parties to such marriages and the names of any minor children. If the marriage ended in divorce or dissolution, the applicant must submit a certified copy of the most recent divorce decree.
STEP 2: Get Married!
When: Within 60 days of obtaining your marriage license
Where: Anywhere within the state (as long as one person resides in Medina County), if you both live out of the state you must get married in the county in which you filed for the license.
How: A licensed minister of any religious society within the State of Ohio, the Judge of Wadsworth or Medina Municipal courts, or the Mayors of Medina County cities or villages.
Cost: Officiants charge anywhere from $100-$1000; Courthouse is about $20
What to Bring: Your government issued ID, marriage license packet
Tips & Tricks: By law there is a five day waiting period. Typically, our Court waives that waiting period and issues the license at the time of application, however, there may be circumstances under which the Court may hold a hearing on the application.
The Court keeps the license on record, you do not receive a copy of the license. To obtain a certified copy of the record there is a $3.00 fee. You may either come to the Court to request a copy or submit the request form with a $3.00 check and self addressed stamped envelope to: Medina County Probate Court, 93 Public Square, Room 104, Medina, OH 44256.
